Maria’s Baseball Game

Here’s some pictures of my daughter playing baseball…

Baseball Blog

Being a baseball fan, I was glad to find http://www.battersbox.ca/ . A Canadian based site that has daily articles on Major League Baseball news and happinings. I like the little baseball images that are hotlinks to the category of the blog. For example, todays post is “The Hunt for a Reds October - The 2006 Sequel” On the right side of the article is an Image of a baseball with “NL Central” written on it. Click on it and it takes you to all the articles on the NL Central. Great idea, in my opinion. Great Blog! Check it out.

Curling Blog

I went searching for a Curling Blog for today’s Blog on Blogs.  I didn’t have to look far to find a good one.  I’m just on a little curling kick lately.  I guess I miss it since I haven’t curled competitively in over 15 years.  Being in the hospitality industry, it’s hard to be available to a team for those early draws since I can never tell when I will be getting out of work.  Could be 7pm, could be 9pm.  I do teach curling to youngsters once a week in the Little Rocks program.

Enough about me. Now about this blog.  It touts itself as “Two independent analysts discuss all aspects of curling …
from technique to strategy to organization to media to finances.”  I really enjoyed the articles that I have read so far. For example the stupidity of requirement of turning off cell phones as to not disturb the curlers.  Come on! Upwards of 10,000 people in the stands and they think that someones pocket singing “The Macarana” is going to disturb the ladies.  I don’t think so.  I also think the short post on the Curling “F” word was rather amusing…. FROST!

Good Show, Olympians

Twenty Four medals for Canada. Excellent showing. The Canadian Olympic committee predicted 25 medals. Too bad the Men’s Hockey team sucked so hard, we would have made the grade. Oh well.

My personal highlights of this years games in Torino were Men’s Curling Gold (obviously) and I really am proud of Speed Skater Cindy Klassen for becoming the most decorated Canadian Olympian in history with her record tying five medals in these games (1G, 2S, 2B) to go along with her bronze from Salt Lake City.

Congratulations team Canada. We are looking forward to Vancouver 2010 where I think we have the ability to show the hometown crowd that a sparsely populated country can be at the top of the Medal Count. Let’s hope Bode Miller competes in four years so we can keep the US count down. ;)
I was also very impressed with Cindy’s teammate Clara Hughs who won two bronze cycling medals in the Atlanta Summer Games in 1996 and ten years later wins a gold in the 5000 meter speed skating final, which is arguably the most painful race in all of sport.

Canada’s Men’s Curling team has finally won their expected gold after coming up short in the previous two attempts. Their victory is extra sweet since, Russ Howard, one member of the team is from my hometown and is the oldest Canadian medalist in history. He turned out to be just what the young guns from Newfoundland (Brad Gushue, Mark Nichols, Jamie Korab and Mike Adams) needed to overcome the pressure and become Olympic Champions. We can’t take anything away from the ladies team for bringing home the Bronze in what is becoming a very closely competitive sport.
